The Zen of Gardening in the High & Arid West: Tips, Tools, and Techniques
Published in Paperback by Fulcrum Pub (April, 2003)
Author: David Wann
Average review score:

Fun, entertaining, and full of useful acvice
This delightful and captivating book on gardening reads like a best-selling novel. The writing is creative and often uproariously funny. I often found myself laughing out loud, even on airplanes, as I turned the pages of this wonderful book.

Although highly entertaining -- and worth reading on that basis alone -- the book is also jam packed with good, practical information. I've learned an enormous amount about gardening in high and arid West -- and I've been gardening here for well over 15 years. This book will also inspire those who have become frustrated with gardening in this sometimes capricious region!
I can't wait to put many of Dave's ideas into practice.

Opened My Eyes About Gardening in the West
In a world so filled with stress, poor health, and daily activities that lack meaning, it's great to have places of refuge, and David Wann's The Zen of Gardening is such a place. Filled with passion, "dry" humor, and hard-won gardening wisdom, the book makes even black thumbs like myself want to dig up a space in my backyard.

Not only does he draw on his own 25 years of gardening, but also taps the experience of some of "the fastest trowels in the west," which he estimates to be a collective 500 years of growing. The reader learns about the life teeming in a shovel full of organic soil, about the chemical signals transmitted between various species in a garden, and about the best varieties of vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs to plant in a "meteorologically challenged" region.

I had a hard time putting the book down, because the writing is so lively, and I found myself absorbing information effortlessly, the way a plant soaks up water!

Great for teaching READING and GEOGRAHPY
C. VanHook...a media specialist, June 28, 2002,
Refreshing ideas to teach READING and GEOGRAPHY
What a great resource! I will take a 'focus' title from the resource and summarize the layout. Will Hobb's is a favorite author of mine, thus BEARSTONE: --begins with brief summary --background is brief with helpful teaching strategies to hook students --bookpairing section is attractive and formatted nicely to grab attention, also encourages reading more titles by same author, a feature I like! --expansion activities: Learn about author and themes in book. Websites are listed with detail about sites and suggestions for learning activities using these websites --hands-on activities give six brief but concise activities to do in classroom : graphic organizer, mapping, create character conversations, archaeologist journaling, cook, writing activity--covers the scope of the curriculum nicely here. --ready to go graphic organizer (student activity page) is included. Consistently, through the hands-on activities, additional books are brought into picture as well as more websites. This is packing so many useful resources into the 112-page resource! Books with audio recording are noted. Many cultures are touched on. There are 15 books recommended per seven U.S. regions covered in the resource. The table of contents will direct you to the 'beginning of each region' page. This page has a nice regional map that features 5 of the 15 books as 'focus' books. The other ten title recommendations are noted at the bottom of that page. All books refer to the states that are set in the stories. The authors will keep an updated list of websites to support this resource at their official websites. That's going 'above and beyond' and is greatly appreciated. The hands-on activities listed per 'focus' book are creative, innovative, exciting, and encourage students to think critically. Students will not just be 'cutting and pasting' information into the form of a book report. They will be living, feeling, and remembering the story for a lifetime! Permission is granted to copy and use the student activity page in the classroom. Excellent resource! Hope they do another just like this one--different titles or maybe with picture text books!!!!

Abandoned: The Story of the Greely Arctic Expedition 1881-1884
Published in Paperback by Univ of Alaska Pr (July, 2001)
Authors: Alden Todd, Terrence Cole, Wilhjalmur Stefansson, and Vihjamur Stefansson
Average review score:

A gripping, true life account
In Abandoned, Alden Todd tells the complete story of the Greely Arctic Expedition (1881-1884) which was launched as part of the United State's participation in the first International Polar Year. Commanded by Adolphus W. Greely, the expedition consisted of twenty-five volunteers who went to what is now Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The men were left to endure short rations and unbroken isolation at their icy base when the first ship to resupply them in 1882 was forced to turn back. The second relief ship (sent in 1883) was crushed in the ice. In 1884, the six survivors of the original twenty-five man crew were finally rescued and brought home. The national excitement of their return was scandalized as rumors of cannibalism during their dreadful, final winter became supported by grisly evidence of cannibalism. Abandoned is a gripping, true life account and history of men battling for their very lives as they are pitted against the elements and each other. Out of print for more than forty years, this University of Alaska Press trade paperback edition is also available in hardcover [...] and highly recommended, dramatic reading.

Above Las Vegas: Its Canyons and Mountains
Published in Hardcover by Cameron & Co (November, 1996)
Authors: Robert Cameron and Jack Sheehan
Average review score:

Best Photos Ever Of A Fantastic City
I've always been a fan of photography from the air and have taken many myself. Robert Cameron has shown the beautiful city of Las Vegas in a way that most other books on Vegas (and there's a lot)lack.

The photos are crystal clear and have captions that explain the photo. Probably the most intriging of the photos are the ones of the Hotel and Casinos. The Luxor, MGM Grand, and the Stratosphere are all excellently photoed.

A great soverniger for anybody wanting to go or have been to Vegas.

Above the Slate: An Appalachian Love Story
Published in Paperback by Jesse Stuart Foundation (01 October, 2002)
Author: Lou Martin

Honest, Open, and a Real Look at Life
I really liked this book. Action..it doesn't have..and forget mystery. It is the story of real people..in a real time..in a real situation. If you want a taste of yesteryear, a time when the man had the say and the woman followed blindly, then this is the book for you. I enjoyed the extras, the gardens, the flowers, and the cooking. I am still hungry for biscuits from having read this book. It has a satisfying ending and is a good story. I am glad I bought it and read it.

Adirondack Canoe Waters, North Flow
Published in Paperback by Adirondack Mountain Club (April, 1988)
Authors: Paul F. Jamieson and Donald Morris
Average review score:

Not Just A Guide; A Labour Of Love!
No one knows the Northern Adirondack rivers and streams better than Paul Jamieson. Having lived nearly his entire life here, he brings forth a book that reads like a detailed guidebook combined with a personal diary. Nearly every canoable river is reviewed including details such as curves and bends, rock outcroppings, rapids, waterfalls and other unique geographical features. Heaped with historic stories of trappers, sportsmen and early environmentalists, Jamieson's prose reads like a personal letter of a dream vacation. Incredibly detailed, the author even breaks down sections of rivers to the tenth of a mile to make sure the canoeist misses nothing. Plenty of great black & white photos with hand drawn maps round out this great guide book. It is due to be re-released soon.
