Butterflies Through Binoculars: A Field Guide to Butterflies in the Boston New York Washington Region
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1993)
Author: Jeffrey Glassberg
Average review score:

Best field guide for butterflies of the northeast
If you are looking for a filed guide to the butterflies of the northeastern United States, this is THE book to get. Written for a relatively small geographical area, the book contains only those butterflies likely to be seen in the regioon...unlike other guidebooks which offer many photos of butterflies not native to the regioon you are in. Excellent photos and the reduced subject area result in quick identifications. Although written for the northeast, the book is useful over a wider range...I have even used it in Texas to great effect. Don't put too much stock in the information about flight period and abundance, though. And don't expect much info on larval hostplants, etc

Caddo Was . . . : A Short History of Caddo Lake
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (March, 1995)
Author: Fred Dahmer
Average review score:

An exciting trip.
After you read this book, you'll want to visit the lake just to see what you can see of the past. Filled with myths and legends, but also with a look at the history of the Texas/Louisiana area. This book is a gem especially to those who are interested in the way life might have been for all those that went to Caddo. Almost has you wishing you could have been there.

California Beach Houses: Style, Interiors, and Architecture
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Pilar Viladas and Mark Darley
Average review score:

Allows for luxurious dreaming about California living....
I bought this book several years ago & have enjoyed it many times since. Luxurious photos showing a wide range of styles of coastal houses from ultra modern to rustic to contemporary. The reader can get good interior design ideas no matter where their own home is located. Interesting descriptions of the owners of these homes as well and why they wanted to live where they live. I wrote this review as a compliment to the author and photographer...a job well done. My copy will be enjoyed for many more years.

The Call for Democracy in Sudan
Published in Paperback by Kegan Paul (August, 1990)
Author: John Garang
Average review score:

An enthralling, if somewhat heavy, study of the Sudanese war
The political and military situation in Africa's largest contry, Sudan, is not considered news in the West, and sothere is very little readily available information about it. In this book John Garang, Commander in Chief of the National Democratic Alliance, writes about his country, its past and its future. For anyone with an interest in African affairs, social justice or the politics of war, this book - written by a warlord - is highly recommended. The book includes many speeches given by Garang as events unfolded in Sudan, and letters exchanged between the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the various other powers in the country over the past decade. Although not really a book for a Saturday afternoon, The Call for Democracy in Sudan is well worth the effort; a score of nine out of ten is well deserved.

Call of the North: An Explorer's Journey to the North Pole

Author: Jean Malaurie

Incredible photography! KUDOS!
This is the most remarkable Arctic book you can buy. It is physically huge! It is a coffee table book if you have big, robust coffee table. I have never seen so many full page and double page photos in a book before. It was produced in Italy, and the picture quality is astounding. Hundreds of images of the Inuit, their ice cave homes, hunting, dogs, Eskimo carvings, family life, etc.

Worth every penny!
Bravo! An amazing man, an amazing collection of his great images.

If you have a brain and can operate a hose, read this!

Cargo of Memories: Saga of the Majestic Showboat
Published in Paperback by Mountain State Pr (October, 1992)
Author: Catherine R. King
Average review score:

A true story of showboat life
This is a must reading for people who were around in the 20s, 30s 40s and 50s and anywhere near the Ohio river. It's a true to life story of the TJ Reynolds family who brought old time showboat entertainment to thousands of people along the river. I found it to be a fascinating glimpse of life aboard showboats and the trials and tribulations of this Reynolds family. What's interesting is that after reading the book, one can actually experience seeing a play on the last showboat, Reynold's Majestic, even today in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carlsbad Caves and a Camera
Published in Paperback by Cave Books (October, 1978)
Author: Robert Nymeyer
Average review score:

About caving in the Guadalupe Mountains in the 1930's
If you're a caver or just interested in caving, this book is a lot of fun. The Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico are home to some of the world's most beautiful caves, including Carlsbad Caverns and Lechuguilla Cave. This book describes Robert Nymeyer's adventures and misadventures with his buddies in the high Guadalupe caves. The descriptions of early vertical caving techniques using lariats and the photographs taken with flash powder are priceless examples of what folks will do when bitten by the exploration bug.

Carrara: The Marble Quarries of Tusany
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (May, 1999)
Authors: Joel Leivick and Alison Leitch
Average review score:

Creation and destruction
This gorgeous book is about the centuries-long process of destroying a body of rock. Every picture shows a landscape or an interior white with the dust of Carrara's exceptionally pure marble; stonecutters white with the dust; even some pictures where you can't tell whether it's fog or dust in the air, or whether it's snow or dust on the rooftops. Carrara is the source of marble for some of the most revered works of sculpture in the Western canon: Michelangelo's David and the Pieta; Bernini's busts, St. Teresa, and hundreds more. To see it all as essentially an industrial process, and to see the people who have given their lives to quarrying this rock, is beautiful, bitter, and moving. There's also a great essay at the back by an Australian anthropologist, which is well worth the read.
