Big Help
This book was a big help. My son and I were going to spend 5 days in Phoenix for a football game. We had no idea on what to do. After reading this book, we were able to have an unbelievable get-away.

The Development of Law on the Rocky Mountain Frontier: Civil Law and Society, 1850-1912 (Contributions in Legal Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (July, 1983)
Author: Gordon Morris Bakken
Average review score:

Pretty darn good for a law book.
I choose this book from my reading list at law school last term, and of all the books in this catagory, I ranked this one on top. If it appears on your reading list - buy it, because it is very concise; the argument is easily understood; you can read it in three hours for class.

Dilmun and its Gulf Neighbours
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (April, 1998)
Author: Harriet E. W. Crawford
Average review score:

The best book on Dilmun and Magan!
In this book, professor Crawford provides an excellent, up-to-date report on what is presently known about the ancient society of Dilmun and others in the Persian Gulf area. Three areas are reported upon: North-western Arabia, Bahrain (Dilmun), and Oman (Magan). The author exhaustively reports on archaeological findings (including architecture, burial items, pottery, and more), analyzing their significance, but avoiding any broad speculation.

I can't say enough about this book. If you want to know what is presently known about Dilmun and Magan, but wish to avoid the extreme speculation (if not outright guesswork) of many books, then this book is for you!

A unique presentation of the original journal entries
Discovering Dinosaurs In The Old West: The Field Journals Of Arthur Lakes, deftly edited by Michael F. Kohl (Amateur paleontologist, Head of Special Collections at the Clemson university Library, and the discovered of Lake's missing journals) and John S. McIntosh (Emeritus Professor of Physics, Wesleyan University and a paleontologist specializing in sauropods), is a unique presentation of the original journal entries from 1877 to 1880 by geologist Arthur Lakes and presented with numerous annotations, clarifications, maps, black-and-white photographs and a great deal more. Enhanced with an informative foreword by John Ostrom (Professor Emeritus of Geology and Geophyiscs, Yale University) Discovering Dinosaurs In The Old West is a superbly presented and invaluable addition to personal, professional, and academic paleontology supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

Discovering Old Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park: An Unconventional History and Guide
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (August, 1996)
Author: Ruth Ann Hill
Average review score:

A Great Compilation of many writings of early Bar Harborites
I've never been one to enjoy reading historical writings very much, but I loved this book. Ruth searched and found many great writings, along with photos to go with them, that tell the stories of early settlers, the "cottagers" and the year round residents of Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor/Acadia is my favorite spot in New England and we will return their again this summer. I will have a better appreciation of the life these people lived in the late 1800s and will better appreciate how fortunate we are to have Acadia as protected natural lands.

Discovering Washington Wines: An Introduction to One of the Most Exciting Premium Wine Regions
Published in Paperback by Raconteurs Press L.L.C. (01 September, 2002)
Author: Tom Parker
Average review score:

Useful, Informative & Entertaining Guide
This very attractively produced book serves as a terrific guide to the wines of Washington. I'm pretty much of an ignoramus when it comes to wines in general so I learned a great deal from this book and appreciated the non-exclusive tone of the writing, but feel sure there is ample depth here for the winoscenti. In addition to learning my Syrah from my Viognier I enjoyed the section on the history of the wine industry in the area and especially on the production and elements of winemaking.

My favorite segment of the book may be the extensive appendix full of all kinds of great material in addition to the useful glossary and list of resources and directory of Washington wineries. The appendix includes indispensable advice on pairing wines with food, tips on selecting wineglasses, and how to remove corks from champagne and sparkling wine bottles.

Now I'm waiting eagerly in hopes the author will start work on "Discovering Washington Beers."

Distant Shores: Photographs from Lake Superior and Lake Michigan
Published in Paperback by Bluestem Productions (September, 1990)
Author: R Olsenius
Average review score:

Beautiful Photography Captures the Heart
It is a shame this book is out of print. The photography is breath taking. The diverse subject matter spotlights each little piece of the region and offers a comprehensive glimpse of life on Great Lakes Michigan and Superior. First introduced to the Upper Penninsula as a child, I was thrilled to receive this book as a gift from my husband. Each time I look through it is a like a little vacation, whether I am in the mood for summer beaches, wild life, the awe-inspiring force of the lakes, or autumn's first snow fall. Mr. Olsenius has a real gift in capturing peoples' personalities and nature's majesty on film. A beautiful book.

Distant Shores: The Odyssey of Rockwell Kent
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (07 August, 2000)
Authors: Constance Martin, Rockwell Kent, and Richard West
Average review score:

Ladies,Gentlemen,Fellow Rockwell Kent nuts!
This effort may not appeal to everyone...certainly not as a coffee table book....but for those of us who follow Kent, his writings, his art and his life story, it is a commendable compliment to the study of his art. This book drove me nuts, so much so that I travelled to Greenland to see the Arctic light and shadows for myself. Kent captured the light and images of a unique land and this book provides a worthwhile reference to many of his Greenland landscapes. I sure would like to see one of his original landscapes hanging on my wall at home:-)

great. we followed it for our month in Bali
We took Tim's advice to heart, and spent a great month in Bali. We toured the island anti-clockwise and dove and photographed all the sites Tim highlighted. We dove with the operators he suggested, as well as some others, and found that his suggestions were always always best.
