Gottschee 1406-1627: Feudal Domain on the Frontier of Empire
Published in Paperback by Gottscheer Heritage & Genealogy Association (July, 2001)
Author: Georg Widmer
Average review score:

Gottschee 1406-1627
Gottschee was a German-speaking feudal domain in the royal Austrian Duchy of Carniola (Herzogtum Krain), which was founded around the year 1300. This feudal domain sat on the southern border of the Holy Roman Empire, later called the Austrian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Gottschee 1406-1627 is an authentic look into the life and government of this feudal domain on the frontier of these empires. Drawn from original source documents, and accurately translated into English from 15th century and later German, the book shows the interaction of the subjects, the ruling local nobility, and the government of the Duchy of Carniola, a duchy belonging to the Habsburg emperors. Included is interesting and seldom-seen information on farmers' petitions for redress of grievances; the system of tithes, taxes, and feudal duties; the opening of forest lands for new farms; a 1406 document granting the Gottscheer peasants unique rights not found amongst the peasants of other parts of Europe; military frontier obligations; the Habsburg system of leasing feudal domains to lesser nobles; church and pastoral affairs; and royal management of feudal properties, plus hundreds of ancient Gottscheer village and family names -- the ancestors of a distinct German linguistic group that existed there for over 650 years.

The book is fascinating reading for anyone whose ancestors come from the Gottschee region (now called Kocevje and in south central Slovenia), or who are interested in how the Habsburg emperors managed their personally-owned feudal domains in this remote frontier domain, to include the impact of the Turkish invasions.

Gottschee 1406-1627: Feudal Domain on the Frontier of Empire was beautifully translated into English by Andrew J. Witter, a professional translator, and it gives an most interesting insight into how people lived on Austria's remote frontier.

Graveyard Peaches: A California Memoir
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (November, 1991)
Authors: Celeste De Blasis and Celeste Deblasis
Average review score:

One of the best descriptive writer's . Where has she gone
Celeste De Blasis brings the story of growing up on a southern California desert to life. I grew up on the high desert also. DeBlasis put voice to my memories of blood red sunrises, sunsets that turned the desert to pure gold, and the starry starry nights of our youth, the stars almost close enough to touch, are not so bright now with the ever encroaching sea of red tile roofs. now that people driven from L.A. by high costs of housing to our precious desert, to live cheap and commute far. When I read this book I was living in Montana. Celeste de blasis brought the desert and ranch life to me again and in our shared regret at losing the wide open, I thought "It isn't gone. It has just moved 1000 miles north to Montana."

The Great Lakes Diving Guide
Published in Paperback by Seawolf Communications (June, 2003)
Authors: Cris Kohl and Chris Kohl
Average review score:

great wreck divers guide
This book has a ton of info on hundereds of dive sites in the great lakes! Primarily focuses on the fascinating wrecks that can be found in the lakes.
Major sites have a small blurb about the history of the wreck and a small black/white picture or map/drawing. LORAN location and lats and lons. Suggested dive profiles.
All sites have a depth and suggested experience level for the dive and a brief discription. Sites are grouped together by location and international borders are ignored - great for both US and Canadian divers! Some info about dive operators and accomodations to certain areas.
Overall, an excellent resource! I'll never be able to dive all the interesting sites in one lifetime. Provides enough info to spark a desire to explore the site but doesn't give too much away.

This was an interesting and well-written book. I'm sorry to see that it's out of print. It contains a lot of interesting information on the desert's plans, animals, and geology. It appeared to be very well researched. and the author seemed to have a great appreciation for this unique part of the country. If you are interested in the desert I would recommend that you try to find a copy of this book.
