Orlando's Other Theme Parks: What to Do After You'Ve Done Disney
Published in Paperback by Intrepid Traveler (March, 1999)
Author: Kelly Monaghan
Average review score:

ABSOLUTELY A MUST HAVE FOR ORLANDO VISITORS!
I've traveled to Orlando at least once a year for the last 7 years and while I've been anxious to explore outside of Walt Disney World I've never had the courage to "risk" my vacaction by spending the time and money to explore some of the lesser known attractions. Time and again I tried to find out more about some of the other available theme parks, but aside from quick write-ups in Disney centered books, there was nothing to be found. This book has been the answer to my prayers! It's well written, extremely detailed and provides the in depth coverage seasoned Disney veterans are used to seeing about the Disney attractions. I am now ready to make informed decisions about the other attractions in the Orlando area, and have in fact booked my next trip with many of these "alternate" parks on my itinerary. I read this book from cover to cover and it has made me as excited about visiting Orlando as I was before my very first trip!

Ostraca
Published in Paperback by Anvil Press Poetry (31 January, 2000)
Authors: Gabriel Levin and Levin Gabriel
Average review score:

Ostraca by Gabriel Levin
I like it subjectively. I get an immediate sense of access to quality with Ostraka. Each poem has a unitary quality, like a gem with gold nuggets instead of carbon flaws.

The first poem had amusing, presumably unintentional, misdirections for me due to the perverse connotations certain words conjured up in my mad mind (I saw an image of a red-tipped used tampon somehow yet half captured by the insertor).

Stuck as I am in a very small universe literature-wise, I delighted at Nobokovian associations, even though I knew they too were probably my own alone. The repeated theme of metamorphosis popped the original bubble replacing it with more pleasant ones. Levin's (rhymes with heaven) own voice emerged (minus the French accent) and I found myself, over halfway through, feeling happy and proud to have found it.

Fine wordsmithing. Lyric cadence. Wonderful work. I look forward to reading and re-reading; freshening up the reading room, temporarily displacing Nabokov's butterflies with Levin's larvae and chrysali.

Other People's Words: The Cycle of Low Literacy
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (May, 1995)
Author: Victoria Purcell-Gates
Average review score:

Accessible Study of Illiteracy
Purcell-Gates avoids the weighty conventions of academic writing and thus opens her studies and insights to the larger world. The book recounts her experiences over two years tutoring a completely illiterate mother and her nearly equally illiterate son. Purcell-Gates, who at the time worked at the local university and literacy center, tells their story with compassion and a strong effort to get at the causes and perpetuation of illiteracy in 20th century American cities, schools, and families. Hers is a noble cause and this is a superb and educational book. She serves her subjects well.

Our Restless Earth: The Geologic Regions of Tennessee
Published in Paperback by Univ of Tennessee Pr (December, 1977)
Author: Edward T. Luther
Average review score:

An excellent geologic and topographic primer
As a Tennessee resident for 15 years, I found this book answered all my questions about this geologically diverse state. The author describes in clear text how and when each of the unique regions were formed and how they relate to each other. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Tennessee, or any student contemplating a high school or college course in geology. It is also a perfect companion to "A Geologic Trip Across Tennessee by Interstate 40" by Harry Moore. "Our Restless Earth" describes what happened, and "A Geologic Trip..." takes you there to view it and collect the evidence.

This book is great for leasure reading as well as a textbook for a marine biology class.

Oyster Moon
Published in Paperback by Tidewater Pub (June, 1996)
Authors: Margaret Meacham and Marcy Dunn Ramsey
Average review score:

Oyster Moon
I thought that Oyster Moon is a great book because I had no idea that the people on the drudger boats could be so cruel. In fact, I had no idea about this whole topic. It is an educational book without the reader realizing it. I would reccomend Oyster Moon to any reader, young or old.
