Oysterback Spoken Here

Authors: Helen Chappell and Rick Kollinger
Average review score:

She's got that magic touch
Chappell, best known for her Sam and Hollis mysteries, is also the author of two collections of short stories about a village out on the marsh called Oysterback, a place where anything can happen and frequently does. These stories are a delight, full of magical realism and the extraordinary realism of day to day living.

Oz Clarke's Wine Atlas: Wines & Wine Regions of the World
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (October, 1995)
Authors: Oz Clarke, Keith Gage, Sue Gage, and Cz Clarke
Average review score:

Superb companion for the worldly wine drinker
This book is both informative and beautifully presented. The descriptions of the wine growing regions, grape types and regional specialties makes looking up the bottle you have just opened a treat, and the illustrations of the hills and valleys producing the best wines in the world makes you want to travel there to taste the wine at the source. Thoroughly recommened.

Ozark Wildflowers (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (April, 1999)
Author: Don Kurz
Average review score:

An excellent wildflower guide for the Ozark region
This attractive field guide describes 355 of the most frequently encountered wildflowers in the Ozarks, with photos for each. The Ozark region, shown in a map at the beginning of the book, covers approximately half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas, and the northeast corner of Oklahoma, plus small areas in Kansas and Illinois.

The book is organized by color, and within each color group, the flowers are listed in order of approximate bloom time. In addition to the large photos, which are attractive and excellent for identification purposes, each entry provides a description of the physical characteristics of the plant, its habitat and range, and additional comments. The additional comments often include mention of similiar species to further aid in identification, and uses of the plant - by both humans and wildlife. Scientific names are up-to-date, and any previously used names are given.

I highly recommend this wildflower guide for use in the Ozark region and nearby areas.

The Ozarks Outdoors: A Guide for Fishermen, Hunters, and Tourists
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (May, 1988)
Author: Milton D. Rafferty
Average review score:

A wealth of information!
If you're interested in finding out about the Ozarks for the first time or if (like me) you've been to the Ozarks many times this is an excellent book. It starts with a thumbnail history and description of the Ozarks but the bulk of this book is devoted to supplying information on the entire region. This information includes geographic features - rivers and streams, caves, lakes, and topographic properties. Also included are descriptions ranging from a paragraph to several pages on just about every stream, lake, town, and park in the Ozarks. I learned new and interesting facts about areas I've visited many times before. If you love the Ozarks this is a great find!

Wonderful Pictures, Wonderful Recipes...
Though some of these recipes are a little out there, most of them are simply delectable. The book provides a great feel for the flavor (pardon the pun) of the region and some wonderful recipes.

Peasant Russia, Civil War: The Volga Countryside in Revolution, 1917-1921
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (August, 1994)
Author: Orlando Figes
Average review score:

A detailed look at the Peasants
Detailed and focussed on the Volga countryside of Russia, 1917-.
If Trotsky and Lenin suceeded in mounting a succesful revolution, why did they succeed in overcoming all opposition and securing the Soviet State?
Through a detailed analysis of the tensions and pressures that ensue. A little narrow in focus for the first-time reader, it would be difficult to get hold of the fdetails firmly. The general reader in depth should try instead People's Tragedy by the same author. This retains the same readabilityy, but you need to be able to place in context some of the developments in the village and their correspondence with events in the Civil War to get all you can out of it.

Something most British BA students of history will want by them when writing essays to give unreproachable quotable stuff, and MA students in the area will want to have opinions upon.
